UEFA is investigating a gesture made by England midfielder Jude Bellingham after scoring a goal against Slovakia

Jude Bellingham’s actions following his dramatic equaliser for England against Slovakia at Euro 2024 have sparked controversy, with UEFA announcing an investigation into the midfielder’s conduct. Despite Bellingham’s insistence that the gesture was an “inside joke” among friends, UEFA’s disciplinary bodies are looking into the matter, stating that it may constitute a potential violation of the basic rules of decent conduct.

While UEFA typically refrains from commenting on ongoing investigations, a statement from the organization confirmed that a disciplinary investigation will be conducted regarding Bellingham’s actions during the match. The statement further emphasized the importance of upholding the principles of fair play and decent conduct in football.

A statement from UEFA read: “A UEFA ethics and disciplinary inspector will conduct a disciplinary investigation regarding a potential violation of the basic rules of decent conduct by the English Football Association player, Jude Bellingham, having allegedly occurred in the scope of this match.”

In response to suggestions that the gesture was directed towards the Slovakia bench, Bellingham clarified on X that it was intended as a lighthearted gesture towards some close friends who were in attendance at the game. Expressing his admiration for the performance of the Slovakia team, Bellingham sought to downplay any potential controversy surrounding his celebratory gesture. “An inside joke gesture towards some close friends who were at the game. “Nothing but respect for how that Slovakia team played tonight.”

The midfielder’s stunning bicycle kick in the 95th minute not only secured a dramatic equaliser for England but also propelled the team into extra-time, where they ultimately emerged victorious. With England now set to face Switzerland in the quarter-finals, the focus remains on the on-field action as the tournament unfolds.
