π——π—˜π—”π—Ÿ π——π—’π—‘π—˜: Newcastle have appointed Paul Mitchell as their new sporting director

Newcastle have undergone a significant restructuring to adjust to the departure of Dan Ashworth to Manchester United, a move marked by the appointment of Paul Mitchell as the new sporting director. Mitchell, who most recently held a similar position at Monaco and previously occupied senior executive roles at RB Leipzig, Tottenham, and Southampton, brings a wealth of experience and expertise in recruitment to the table.

The 42-year-old’s journey into scouting began after an injury ended his playing career at the age of 27. His arrival at St James’ Park follows Ashworth being placed on gardening leave in February, and the resolution of compensation negotiations between Newcastle and Manchester United after Ashworth’s move to Old Trafford.

Mitchell’s appointment signals a shift in focus towards recruitment, although he is expected to have involvement across various areas, including the women’s team, reflecting a broader scope than that of Ashworth’s remit. His arrival comes at a crucial juncture for Newcastle, who recently navigated potential breaches of profit and sustainability rules by selling Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson, actions that also contributed to balancing the financial books following the settlement with United.

As a new profit and sustainability rules cycle commences, Newcastle is gearing up to reinforce the playing squad, a task in which Mitchell is poised to play a pivotal role. “I’ve seen the recent growth and ambition of the club,” said Mitchell. “This, plus the amazing fanbase, made the decision to join an easy one. I can’t wait to help continue the organisation’s growth and long-term competitiveness in all areas of elite football performance.”

Amidst this backdrop, Newcastle faces the absence of midfield prospect Lewis Miley until October due to a freak foot injury sustained during training. Miley, who impressed after breaking into the first team last season, had been working on a planned return to full fitness after an injury while on international duty with the England Under-20s in March. However, a setback now requires him to undergo surgery on Monday, initiating a three-month layoff.
