Max Kilman has signed a seven-year deal with West Ham after departing Wolves in a £40m transfer

West Ham has successfully secured the services of Max Kilman from Wolves in a blockbuster £40m deal, marking an exciting new chapter for the talented central defender. Kilman, who signed a long-term deal with Wolves last summer after turning down interest from Napoli, expressed his enthusiasm for joining West Ham, citing the club’s ambitious plans and the prospect of playing in front of a passionate fanbase at the London Stadium as pivotal factors in his decision.

The move sees Kilman reunite with his former coach Julen Lopetegui, under whom he worked at Molineux. Lopetegui, who recently took the reins at West Ham, has already made his mark with the signings of Luis Guilherme and Wes Foderingham, further bolstering the squad with Kilman’s arrival.

In an interview with West Ham’s website, Kilman conveyed his excitement about the transfer, emphasizing his admiration for Lopetegui’s coaching acumen and expressing confidence in his own continual development under the manager’s guidance. The defender’s eagerness to contribute to West Ham’s ambitions resonates with the club’s vision for a promising future, as articulated by both Lopetegui and Tim Steidten, the sporting director.

Kilman told West Ham’s website: “It’s an amazing feeling to be a West Ham United player. As soon as I was aware of the interest from the club it was an opportunity I was keen to pursue, so I couldn’t be more delighted to be here.

“I really enjoyed working with Julen during his time at Wolves – he’s a top-class coach and someone I learned a lot from, and I am confident I will continue to improve as a player under his management here.

“West Ham is a massive club and I feel this is the natural next step forward in my career. Playing in front of a passionate fanbase, with 62,500 supporters packing out London Stadium every other week, is something I am incredibly excited about.

“Having spoken at length to both Julen and Tim [Steidten, sporting director], I was hugely encouraged about the ambition of the club and their plans for the future. They want to make a big noise here at West Ham and as a new player coming in, that’s an incredible thing to hear.

“I’m looking forward to getting down to work and preparing for an exciting season ahead.”

Notably, Kilman’s move has significant implications for Maidenhead, the National League club from which he was acquired by Wolves in 2018 for a mere £40,000. Maidenhead negotiated a shrewd sell-on clause, entitling them to a substantial share of the transfer fee, which is estimated to be in the range of £6-8m. This lucrative provision underscores the far-reaching impact of player transfers on clubs across different tiers of English football.

Looking ahead, West Ham’s proactive approach in the transfer market indicates ongoing discussions for additional defensive reinforcements, reflecting the club’s commitment to fortifying their squad. With the potential departure of Nayef Aguerd and the recent conclusion of Angelo Ogbonna’s contract, West Ham remains engaged in negotiations, including pursuits for talents such as Jean-Clair Todibo from Nice and Republic of Ireland international defender Jake O’Brien from Lyon, highlighting their determination to assemble a formidable defensive lineup for the upcoming season.

The completion of the Max Kilman deal adds further momentum to West Ham’s transfer activity, signaling their intent to build a competitive squad capable of achieving their ambitions in the Premier League. As the club navigates the complexities of the transfer window, the arrival of Kilman stands as a testament to their strategic recruitment efforts and serves as a source of excitement for supporters eagerly anticipating an eventful campaign on the horizon.
