The Wimbledon Championships witnessed stunning upsets and disappointing defeats as World No 1 Iga Swiatek and Britain’s Harriet Dart both suffered unexpected losses in the third round.
Polish sensation Iga Swiatek, who was on a remarkable 21-match winning streak, faced a surprising defeat in the hands of Yulia Putintseva. After claiming the opening set, Swiatek seemed poised for a comfortable victory. However, Putintseva mounted a stunning comeback, winning the next two sets decisively and securing a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 triumph. Swiatek’s unexpected loss marked the end of her impressive run at the All England Club, much to the surprise of the audience.
Britain’s Harriet Dart, who had displayed resilience in the previous round by defeating her compatriot Katie Boulter, faced a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of China’s Xinyu Wang. The match, which was marred by rain delays, saw Dart initially take the lead before succumbing to a strong comeback by Wang. Despite a valiant effort, Dart lost the grueling encounter 6-2, 5-7, 3-6, missing out on a place in the fourth round after dropping six straight games in the deciding set. This setback brought an end to Dart’s Wimbledon campaign, leaving her disappointed after showing promise in earlier rounds.
Meanwhile, Ons Jabeur’s hopes of reaching her third Wimbledon finals appearance were dashed as she suffered a 6-1, 7-6 defeat to Elina Svitolina. This loss marked the conclusion of Jabeur’s pursuit at Wimbledon, while Svitolina secured her place to face Wang in the subsequent round, setting the stage for further gripping encounters in the tournament.
