Craig Bellamy has been appointed as the new manager for the Wales national football team, succeeding Rob Page who was relieved of his duties last month. Bellamy declined the opportunity to remain at Burnley under the management of Scott Parker, and has instead signed a contract with Wales until 2028.
The appointment of Bellamy followed an intensive search led by key figures at the Football Association of Wales (FAW), including chief executive Noel Mooney and technical director David Adams. Bellamy, 44, brings with him a wealth of experience, having previously served as the captain of the Wales national team and earning 78 caps for his country between 1998 and 2013.
“It’s an incredible honour for me to be given the opportunity to lead my country and it’s the proudest moment of my career,” Bellamy said in a statement released on the FAW’s official website. “It was always my ultimate dream to become the Cymru head coach and I am ready for the challenge. “I will give my full commitment to develop this team and I am passionate to bring continued success into Welsh football. I can’t wait to get started with our Nations League games in September.”
Prior to his new role with the Wales national team, Bellamy contributed to Burnley as a first team coach under Vincent Kompany from July 2022. Upon departing Burnley, Bellamy conveyed a message to the club’s supporters, expressing his gratitude and fondness for the experience. His extensive background as a player, coupled with his coaching expertise, positions him well to lead Wales into a new era of football as their manager.
