Lulu Sun’s Wimbledon journey came to an end in the quarter-finals as she encountered a tough challenge from experienced Croatian Donna Vekic. The 123rd-ranked qualifier fought hard but was ultimately defeated in a closely contested match, with Vekic emerging victorious with a score of 5-7, 6-4, 6-1.
Vekic’s triumph in this match marked her first appearance in a Grand Slam semi-final, a significant achievement for the unseeded 28-year-old. Notably, Vekic became only the second woman from Croatia to reach this stage at the esteemed All England Club, following in the footsteps of Mirjana Lucic’s 1999 feat.
The encounter at Wimbledon was not without its challenges for both players. Despite early pressure, Sun demonstrated resilience by saving three break points in a grueling, 10-deuce fourth game. Her determination led to a breakthrough as she managed to break Vekic’s serve and ultimately clinch the first set with a gutsy hold.
Although Sun initially appeared more composed, Vekic rallied in the second set, securing a crucial break in the eighth game. Both players faced moments of tension, evidenced by Vekic’s three double faults at deuce, allowing Sun three break points. The seesaw battle continued until Vekic capitalized on a set point, leveling the match with a well-executed drop shot.
As the third set commenced, Vekic’s experience and skill were evident as she rapidly gained momentum, claiming victory in 12 consecutive points. Despite Sun’s determined efforts, she was unable to turn the tide, ultimately conceding the match as Vekic secured a 5-0 lead in the set.
In the end, after a spirited display in her eighth match of the tournament, Sun concluded her Wimbledon campaign after two hours and eight minutes of intense competition.
