Conmebol is investigating the “unacceptable” confrontation between Uruguay’s Darwin Nunez and Colombia fans at the Copa America in the United States.
The incident took place in the aftermath of Colombia’s 1-0 victory over Uruguay in the semi-final match at Charlotte, North Carolina. Liverpool forward Nunez found himself in an altercation with spectators in the stands, particularly in the section where many family members of the Uruguay players were seated.
In response to the situation, Conmebol, South American football’s governing body, issued a statement emphasizing the need to prevent such incidents that turn passion into violence. The organization reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a positive and safe environment for both players and fans during the Copa America, ahead of the final match.
“It is unacceptable that an incident like this turns passion into violence,” read a statement from Conmebol, South American football’s governing body.
“On the eve of the final of Copa America, we want to reaffirm and warn that no action will be tolerated that tarnishes this global football celebration, which involves both the players and the fans present in the stadium.”
Conmebol has expressed its intention to thoroughly investigate the sequence of events that led to the altercation and the resulting disorder. This disturbing turn of events occurred following Colombia’s victory, which secured their place in the final against Argentina on Sunday.
Nunez was observed climbing the railings and entering the crowded stands, prompting Uruguay captain Jose Maria Gimenez to underline the lack of police presence and the need to protect their families. He attributed the incident to the actions of a few individuals who may have overindulged and couldn’t handle themselves appropriately.
After the situation calmed down, Nunez was seen embracing his son on the pitch. The striker has not yet publicly addressed the incident or offered a statement regarding the events that transpired.
