Thomas Muller, the esteemed forward from Germany, has decided to bring his international career to a close after the culmination of Euro 2024, which took place in his homeland. At 34 years old, Muller confirmed his retirement from international football the day after Spain clinched the European Championship trophy in Berlin, triumphing over England. Muller leaves behind a remarkable 14-year career with Germany, boasting an impressive record of 86 goal contributions in just 131 caps.
Despite being selected for the Germany squad for Euro 2024, Muller only played a total of 56 minutes across two appearances. Nevertheless, he managed to provide an assist in the opening match against Scotland. His final cap came as a substitute in the quarter-final defeat to Spain, as the hosts bid farewell after extra time.
Muller notably played a pivotal role in Germany’s 2014 World Cup victory, contributing five goals during the tournament. He also secured the Golden Boot award in the previous World Cup held in South Africa four years earlier.
While Muller has concluded his international career, he still has one year remaining on his contract with Bayern Munich. Muller’s departure leaves big shoes to fill for the German national team, but they can look to emerging talents such as Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz to potentially step up and fill the void left by the legendary forward.
