Newcastle United CEO Darren Eales Affirms Commitment to Retain Eddie Howe Amidst England Manager Interest

Newcastle United chief executive Darren Eales has expressed the club’s determination to retain Eddie Howe as their manager amidst potential interest from the Football Association in hiring him as the next England manager. Eddie Howe, who at 46 is considered a leading candidate to succeed Gareth Southgate, has been instrumental in steering Newcastle away from relegation since his appointment as manager in 2021. His significant contributions led to a long-term contract extension in 2022, solidifying his position as the club’s leader in their ongoing journey.

In response to inquiries about the club’s stance on a potential approach from the FA for Howe, Eales emphasized their commitment to retaining him, stating, “Yes, absolutely. We’re on an exciting journey and, as far as we’re concerned, Eddie is the man to lead us on that. For us, he’s exactly the right man for the project we are on at Newcastle United and that is why we are committed to a long-term deal with him. That’s why we think he’s the right man for Newcastle. We love him.”

Eales also highlighted that due to Howe’s long-term contract with the club, they would be entitled to compensation should he agree to take on the role of England’s manager, although no specific amount has been set.

The potential departure of Gareth Southgate as the England manager following their defeat in the Euro 2024 final has prompted speculation about the next steps for the national team. With the upcoming match against the Republic of Ireland in the Nations League, the prospect of an interim manager leading the team until Southgate’s successor is appointed looms on the horizon.
