Marseille have made a significant move by signing forward Mason Greenwood from Manchester United in a deal that extends until 2029 and is valued at up to 31.6 million euros (Β£26.6 million). Greenwood, 22, emerged from United’s academy but had not featured for the Premier League club since January 2022. During the previous season, he was on loan at Getafe.
It’s worth noting that serious charges, including attempted rape and assault, against Greenwood were dropped in February 2023. This development has led to mixed reactions from the public and football fans alike.
The decision of the French club to pursue the signing of Greenwood prompted criticism from the Marseille mayor. This controversy has brought attention to the ethical considerations involved in the transfer of players with a history of legal issues.
Greenwood made his competitive senior debut for United back in 2019, when he came on as a substitute against Paris St-Germain in the Champions League. Over his time at the club, he accumulated 35 goals in 129 appearances and earned his first and only England cap in 2020.
Furthermore, United has safeguarded their interests by including a substantial sell-on clause in their agreement with Marseille. This strategic move by the English club could lead to future financial benefits in the event of Greenwood’s subsequent transfer from the French outfit.
