Lando Norris eventually complied with McLaren team orders to cede the lead and the win to his teammate Oscar Piastri, but only after a series of increasingly stern commands from the pit wall. The request for Norris to yield the lead followed a gripping and increasingly contentious 70-lap race at the Hungarian Grand Prix. It was a highly-dramatic and controversial race that saw Piastri overtake polesitter Norris at the start and seemingly cruise towards his first grand prix win in just his 35th start.
However, the race took a dramatic turn as Norris jumped Piastri after a well-timed pit stop, which initially appeared to be orchestrated to ensure that the Briton did not lose second place to Lewis Hamilton, who had already pitted. Despite being instructed to give the place back to Piastri, Norris maintained his position as the lead car, prompting increasingly stern instructions from his race engineer.
Finally, with three laps to go, Norris yielded the lead to Piastri. This turn of events added an extra layer of excitement and tension to an already thrilling race. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton demonstrated his vast experience and skill by driving a strong race to claim third place despite a dramatic collision with his old rival, Max Verstappen. The clash between Hamilton and Verstappen in the final stint led to the Red Bull briefly going airborne as the two cars made contact. This incident, which occurred as Verstappen attempted to dive down the inside of Hamilton at Turn One, is currently under investigation by the post-race stewards.
The drama didn’t end there, as Verstappen dropped behind Charles Leclerc and finished in fifth place. In the midst of all the excitement at the front, Carlos Sainz secured sixth place in the second Ferrari, with Sergio Perez finishing ahead of George Russell to claim seventh position after a strong race following his qualifying crash, which had initially left him in 16th place on the grid. The unexpected turn of events and the intense battles throughout the race made the Hungarian Grand Prix a memorable and highly dramatic event in the world of Formula 1.
