Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has confidently stated that influential midfielder Kevin de Bruyne will remain at the club, brushing off the swirling transfer rumors linking the player to a move to Saudi Arabia. With just one year remaining on his Blues contract, de Bruyne had previously acknowledged the allure of a potential move to the Saudi Pro-League due to the “incredible money” on offer. Nonetheless, Guardiola’s assurance of de Bruyne’s continuity at the club is unwavering, as he declared to reporters prior to his side’s opening pre-season game against Celtic in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, “Kevin isnβt leaving.”
The Belgian playmaker played a pivotal role in City’s journey to securing the Premier League title last season, marking the club’s fourth consecutive triumph and his sixth in total with the team. While there have been speculations surrounding Crystal Palaceβs England Euro 2024 squad member Ebereche Eze potentially moving to City, and interest from Saudi Arabia regarding Brazil goalkeeper Ederson, Guardiola remains grounded in his belief that the squad will likely remain unchanged.
Reflecting on the potential for player movements, Guardiola noted, “If someone leaves, we are going to talk about that and, of course, until the last day [of the transfer window] we have chances. I donβt rule out new players as an option, but I think there is an 85, 90, 95% chance we will have the same squad.” With the looming Premier League title defense set to commence against Chelsea on 18th August, the manager’s focus seems to be firmly set on retaining the core of his current squad while being open to the possibility of further strengthening the team.
