Enzo Fernandez received support from Enzo Maresca in the midst of a racist Copa America song controversy

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca expressed confidence that there will be no issues as midfielder Enzo Fernandez joins the squad on their US pre-season tour, despite ongoing disciplinary proceedings regarding alleged racism. The 23-year-old midfielder was accused by the French Football Federation of participating in a “racist and discriminatory” chant following Argentina’s victory in the Copa America.

The song in question contains lyrics that question the heritage of France’s black and mixed-race players. Fernandez’s teammate Wesley Fofana, who has represented France, addressed the incident on Instagram, condemning it as “uninhibited racism.” FIFA has initiated an investigation, and Fernandez has since issued an apology.

Maresca emphasized the simplicity of the situation, noting that both the player and the club have issued statements of apology. He conveyed his belief that there is nothing further to address, stating, “It is already clear and clarified.” Additionally, Maresca dismissed concerns about potential issues within the squad, citing discussions with the players involved and their willingness to move forward.

Captain Reece James, echoing Maresca’s sentiments, acknowledged the complexity of the situation and expressed readiness to handle any arising issues. He emphasized the importance of Fernandez acknowledging his mistake and initiating the process of reconciliation. James indicated that a decision on involvement would be made upon Fernandez’s arrival and emphasized the private nature of the ongoing conversations.
