Andy Murray has withdrawn from the Paris Olympic Games men’s singles tennis tournament

Murray’s withdrawal from the men’s singles event in Paris follows his earlier decision to skip the singles at Wimbledon, a move prompted by his recovery from surgery to remove a spinal cyst. In an interview with Sky Sports, Murray expressed his commitment to prioritizing doubles play with Evans, acknowledging that this approach provides the best opportunity for both of them to contend for a medal. The consideration of his physical condition, particularly his ongoing recovery from back issues, played a role in his decision-making process, as Murray highlighted the potential challenges of playing multiple singles matches in a day given his current physical state.

“I need to make that decision, but I don’t think so,” Murray told Sky Sports earlier this week when asked if he would play in the Olympic singles.

“Obviously me and Dan have made the commitment to each other that [doubles] was what we were going to prioritise.

“I think Dan is still going to play singles, but last week he did a lot of doubles practice, that’s what I was predominantly practising in training when I was in Greece and since we’ve been here, we’ve been practising and playing
doubles sets together.

“That gives the team and us the best opportunity to get a medal, realistically. My back is still not perfect and the potential of playing two matches in a day is maybe not the best.”
