Mirra Andreeva clinches her first WTA Tour title in Romania before the Paris Olympics

Mirra Andreeva, at just 17 years old, secured her first WTA Tour title at the Iasi Open in Romania. The young Russian’s victory came after her compatriot Elina Avanesyan was forced to retire in the final match. Andreeva had been leading 5-7 7-5 4-0 when Avanesyan pulled out of the match close to midnight. Notably, at that stage, Andreeva had only lost a mere four points in the deciding set. This notable win sets Andreeva up for her upcoming Olympic campaign, where she is scheduled to face Poland’s Magda Linette at Roland-Garros on Sunday.

Following her success at the Iasi Open, the talented Andreeva is set to transition directly into the Olympic Games, poised to compete in her opening singles match in the Paris Games on Sunday. Her opponent, Magda Linette, is also entering the Olympics with confidence, coming off a title win after defeating her compatriot Magdalena Frech 6-2 6-1 in the Prague Open final.

Andreeva’s recent achievements further underscore her rising star in the world of tennis. Prior to her success at the Iasi Open, she reached the semi-finals at this year’s French Open and achieved a notable presence by progressing to round four at Wimbledon in 2023 at the age of just 16.

Of particular note, Andreeva’s triumph at the Iasi Open at the age of 17 years and 90 days solidifies her position as the youngest woman to secure a tour-level singles title since Coco Gauff’s victory in Parma in 2021, when Gauff was 20 days younger. Such remarkable milestones early in her career foreshadow an exciting journey ahead for Mirra Andreeva in the world of professional tennis.
