Kicker Harrison Butker has solidified his future with the Kansas City Chiefs by signing a new four-year, $25.6 million deal with the franchise, which will keep him with the team through 2028. This significant contract, which Butker negotiated independently without legal representation, has made him the highest-paid kicker in the NFL, surpassing the previous record set by Baltimore’s Justin Tucker in 2022.
Butker, who famously secured the game-winning field goal in Kansas City’s Super Bowl victory two years ago, expressed his excitement about the extension, stating: “There’s no place I’d rather be than with the Chiefs, excited to finalize a 4 year extension. To the Heights!”
The kicker has been an indispensable asset to the Chiefs, boasting an impressive 89.1% field goal conversion rate over seven seasons, including a 70% success rate from beyond the 50-yard mark. Notably, Butker has played a significant role in the team’s playoff successes, contributing 32 successful field goals out of 36 attempts (88.9%) and 62 out of 65 extra points (95.4%) during postseason play, contributing to the Chiefs’ three Super Bowl titles.
However, Butker’s public profile received heightened attention following a controversial commencement speech at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas. His remarks relating to gender ideologies, Pride month, and President Joe Biden’s policies generated both support and backlash. Despite the controversy, Butker remains steadfast in expressing his beliefs, receiving both endorsement and criticism for his statements.
Notably, Kansas City’s star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, publicly expressed his disagreement with Butker’s comments, while also defending his teammate’s character. This public discourse resulted in a surge in sales of Butker’s jersey.
“There’s certain things that he said that I don’t necessarily agree with, but I understand the person that he is and he is trying to do whatever he can to lead people in the right direction,” Mahomes said in May.
With Butker’s contract secured, the Chiefs are now focused on pursuing a historic Super Bowl three-peat, aiming to further cement their status as a dominant force in the NFL.
