The deal between Manchester City and Atletico Madrid for striker Julian Alvarez is set to make history as City is looking at a record sale worth up to £82m (€95m). Talks between the two clubs have been progressing well over the last 24 hours, with Atletico prepared to pay £64m up front (€75m) and the rest of the fee coming in add-ons. This significant profit on the initial £14m investment in Alvarez in January 2022 underscores the successful business dealings of the Premier League champions.
Despite the ongoing negotiations, personal terms are yet to be finalized, but this is not expected to be a hurdle. Alvarez, during his two and a half years at the Etihad Stadium, has made a lasting impact with 103 appearances and 36 goals. His achievements with City, including winning two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, Champions League, Super Cup, and Club World Cup titles all in 2023, have cemented his legacy.
However, Alvarez’s imminent move to Atletico Madrid could potentially influence Chelsea’s transfer plans, both in terms of incoming and outgoing players. Specifically, Chelsea’s acquisition of Samu Omorodion depends on Atletico securing a suitable replacement striker, which appears likely to be Alvarez. Additionally, the negotiations between Atletico and Chelsea over Omorodion also involve Conor Gallagher, who is on standby to travel to Madrid.
The potential transfer fee being discussed for Omorodion, who is a top striker target for Chelsea, is in the region of £35m, similar to the valuation of Gallagher. This interconnected web of transfer negotiations and player movements underscores the dynamic nature of modern football transfer dealings.
