Lee Carsley: Interim Head Coach for England National Football Team

Lee Carsley will bring his wealth of experience to the role of interim head coach for the England national football team as they navigate through a transitional period following the departure of Gareth Southgate. The Football Association has announced that Carsley, who currently serves as the Under-21 manager, will lead the team during the upcoming Nations League fixtures against the Republic of Ireland and Finland. Moreover, the FA has expressed its intent for Carsley to remain at the helm throughout the autumn while the search for a permanent head coach unfolds.

In his statement, Carsley, a distinguished former Ireland midfielder, conveyed his honor at the opportunity to guide the England squad on an interim basis.“It’s an honour to step up and lead this England squad on an interim basis. As I am very familiar with the players and the cycle of international football, it makes sense for me to guide the team while the FA continues the process to recruit a new manager. My main priority is to ensure continuity and our goal is to secure promotion in the Uefa Nations League.”

Having achieved remarkable success by guiding the Under-21 team to victory in the European Under-21 Championship last summer, Carsley’s credentials and coaching acumen are indisputable. Under his leadership, the team achieved an exceptional record, winning all six matches without conceding a goal and securing a memorable victory over Spain in the final. His tenure with the Under-21s, which commenced in July 2021, has further solidified his standing as a respected figure within the Football Association, building on his previous coaching roles within the development teams.

Mark Bullingham, the CEO of the FA, expressed confidence in Carsley’s abilities, highlighting his reputation as a fantastic coach with extensive experience working with many of the current senior squad members at both international and club levels.: “Lee is a fantastic coach who is well known to the majority of our current senior squad having worked with most at international or club level. He offers us a very strong interim solution and we are confident he will perform well in the Uefa Nations League games ahead. We are grateful to Lee for stepping up to manage the team while we continue with our recruitment process.”
