British tennis player and No. 2 seed, Cameron Norrie, has unfortunately been ruled out of the upcoming US Open due to a forearm injury sustained after his recent defeat to Rafael Nadal at the Swedish Open.
In a statement shared on Instagram, Norrie expressed his disappointment, highlighting that despite his best efforts, the recovery of his forearm injury has taken longer than anticipated. As a result, he has made the difficult decision to withdraw from this year’s US Open. Norrie emphasized his intention to take the necessary time for rest and recovery, eagerly looking forward to returning to competitive tennis in the near future, expressing his anticipation to get back into action.
“I have been working hard to get my body to full health – unfortunately my forearm injury is not recovering as soon as I would have hoped,” he said on Instagram.
“Therefore I will not be able to compete in this year’s US Open. I’ll take some rest and recharge. Can’t wait to get back to competing like a dog.”
Throughout the year, the 28-year-old has faced a series of setbacks due to various injuries, impacting his performance and resulting in his world ranking slipping to 46. At the Australian Open in January, Norrie exhibited determination by playing through a wrist problem, ultimately being defeated by Alexander Zverev in the fourth round. Subsequently, he faced further disappointment as he was forced to withdraw from the Paris Olympics, halting his first-round match against Tallon Griekspoor.
Recently, Norrie had to forgo participation in both the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Open, and now, he faces the regrettable setback of missing the US Open. As a consequence, his place in the main draw will be taken by Francisco Comesana of Argentina.
This news arrives alongside the withdrawal of Marketa Vondrousova, as the Czech player has also been compelled to withdraw from the US Open due to an injury. Her focus now shifts to ensuring her readiness for future competitions.
Vondrousova achieved notable success by winning her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon last year and securing the runner-up position at the 2019 French Open. Additionally, she claimed a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Despite these past victories, a hand injury led to her departure from the Olympics, and subsequently, she endured a surprising first-round loss at Wimbledon this year.
With the absence of these talented players, the US Open’s landscape experiences a reshuffle as Petra Martic of Croatia steps into the main draw, offering the forthcoming tournament a new dynamic.
