British No 1 Jack Draper pulled off a remarkable comeback to secure a three-set victory over ninth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Cincinnati Open on Thursday. Draper, ranked 28th in the ATP standings, won 3-6 6-4 7-5, claiming 12 of the last 17 points in the match.
Tsitsipas served for the match at 5-4 in the third set, but Draper’s resilience and determination saw him turn the tables and emerge victorious, progressing to the third round. The British player had shown signs of physical distress during his first-round match but displayed impressive movement and agility during this encounter.
In the deciding set, Draper faced significant pressure from Tsitsipas, who had three break points in the opening game. However, Draper held firm, eventually seizing the momentum and securing a hard-earned win. This victory marks Draper’s second consecutive win against Tsitsipas.
Having secured this remarkable win, Draper will now face the winner of the match between seventh seed Casper Ruud and Felix Auger-Aliassime, with a spot in the quarter-finals at stake.
In other matches, Carlos Alcaraz‘s second-round clash with Gael Monfils was suspended due to rain, with the Spaniard leading 6-4 in the first set. The match is set to resume on Friday, with the winner facing 15th seed Holger Rune later in the day.
Notable results also included Alexander Zverev‘s milestone 50th tour-level win this season, Hubert Hurkacz’s comeback victory against Yoshihito Nishioka, and Andrey Rublev’s success against Zhizhen Zhang. American Ben Shelton also delighted the home crowd with a hard-fought win, while Grigor Dimitrov suffered an unexpected defeat to Hungarian Fabian Marozsan.
