Holger Rune Defeats Jack Draper in Cincinnati Open Quarter-Finals

Jack Draper’s run at the Cincinnati Open came to an end in the quarter-finals as he suffered a defeat in straight sets at the hands of Denmark’s Holger Rune. Despite his previous come-from-behind victories in the tournament, the British number one was unable to replicate the feat against the 15th seed. Holger Rune sealed a 6-4 6-2 victory after capitalizing on his only break point opportunity in the first set, gaining a crucial lead at 3-2. In the second set, the Dane broke early and fended off three break points from Draper, before securing his victory by breaking Draper’s serve in the 11th game and serving out the match.

Looking ahead, Holger Rune, 21, is set to face Frances Tiafoe in the semi-finals following Hubert Hurkacz’s retirement due to a calf injury after the first set. Meanwhile, top seed Jannick Sinner of Italy secured a hard-fought win, defeating Andrey Rublev 4-6 7-5 6-4, setting up a semi-final clash against Alexander Zverev, who overcame Ben Shelton in a tight encounter with a score of 3-6 7-6 7-5.

On the women’s side, the world number one Iga Swiatek of Poland demonstrated her resilience, battling past Mirra Andreeva 4-6 6-3 7-5. Up next, she is scheduled to face the third seed Aryna Sabalenka, who secured a 6-3 6-3 victory over Liudmila Samsonova.
