Northern Ireland Captain Jonny Evans Retires from International Football

Northern Ireland captain Jonny Evans has announced his retirement from international football, effective immediately. This decision marks the end of an illustrious career representing his country, during which he earned 107 caps.

Evans, a distinguished defender who currently plays for Manchester United, expressed his gratitude for the privilege of representing Northern Ireland. Having been recognized with an MBE for his contributions to football in the country, Evans emphasized the honor and pride he derived from donning the green shirt and serving as an ambassador for his homeland on the international stage.

Notably, Evans played a pivotal role in Northern Ireland’s journey to Euro 2016, a historic achievement for the team after a 30-year absence from major tournaments. His leadership and defensive prowess contributed to the team’s successful campaign, reaching the tournament’s knockout stage.

Reflecting on his remarkable international career, Evans acknowledged the support and guidance of various managers throughout his tenure, including Lawrie Sanchez, Nigel Worthington, Ian Baraclough, and current boss Michael O’Neill. He also conveyed his appreciation for his predecessors, such as Steven Davis and Stuart Dallas, whose retirements preceded his own.

As Evans bids farewell to international duty, Northern Ireland’s squad prepares for forthcoming challenges in the UEFA Nations League, with O’Neill set to reveal the team selection for the upcoming matches against Luxembourg and Bulgaria.
