Women’s world No 1 Iga Swiatek dominated her match, losing just one game as she ruthlessly dispatched Japan’s Ena Shibahara to reach the third round of the US Open. The defending champion at Flushing Meadows in 2022, Swiatek faced a tougher challenge in the previous round but made light work of Shibahara. Her next opponent will be either Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova or Elisabetta Cocciaretto.
Two-time champion Naomi Osaka’s hopes were dashed by Karolina Muchova in a 6-3 7-6 (7-5) defeat. Osaka, in her return to the main court at the US Open since 2022, was unable to overcome Muchova’s strong performance.
Elena Rybakina, the women’s fourth seed, has pulled out through injury, providing France’s Jessika Ponchet with a walkover. Men’s world No 1 Jannik Sinner progressed in routine fashion, comfortably beating young American hopeful Alex Michelsen in straight sets , 6-4 6-0 6-2 . Sinner will face Christopher O’Connell in the next round after the Australian beat Italy’s Mattia Bellucci.
Seventh seed Hubert Hurkacz and 16th seed Sebastian Korda were defeated by Jordan Thompson and Tomas Machac, respectively, on day four in the men’s singles. Hurkacz was beaten 7-6 (7-2) 6-1 7-5 as Thompson set up a third-round meeting with Italian 30th seed Matteo Arnaldi, while Machac will now take on David Goffin or Adrian Mannarino.
Additionally, tenth seed Alex de Minaur defeated Otto Virtanen 7-5 6-1 7-6 (7-3) and will face Dan Evans next.
