Ron Yeats: The former captain of Liverpool has passed away at the age of 86

Liverpool Football Club is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Ron Yeats, a true legend of the club. Yeats, who was the first Liverpool captain to lift the FA Cup, breathed his last at the age of 86. Recognized for his exceptional leadership and prowess as a centre-back, Yeats made an indelible mark on the club’s history.

Born in Aberdeen, Yeats joined Liverpool in July 1961 after being signed by the renowned manager Bill Shankly. The towering centre-back quickly became a pivotal figure at Anfield, earning the admiration of Shankly who famously described him as a “colossus” at his unveiling. Within six months of his arrival, Yeats assumed the captaincy, a role he held for an impressive 10 years, setting a record 417-match run as Reds skipper, a feat only surpassed by Steven Gerrard in more recent years.

During his illustrious career at Liverpool, Yeats made 454 appearances and found the back of the net 16 times. His leadership and defensive prowess played a crucial role in guiding the club out of the Second Division and towards significant victories, including two Division One league titles. However, his crowning achievement came in 1965 when he led Liverpool to their first FA Cup triumph, an historic moment that showcased his unwavering determination and leadership qualities. Notably, Yeats even displayed his candid nature during the trophy presentation, admitting to the Queen that he was “knackered” after the energy-sapping final win over Leeds.

Following his remarkable playing career, Yeats continued to contribute to the club’s success in various roles. After departing Liverpool, he served as Tranmere’s player-manager for three years before embarking on a brief but eventful spell in America in his late 30s. In 1986, he made a poignant return to Anfield, this time as the chief scout, a position he held for two decades. Yeats took great pride in identifying talents such as Sami Hyypia, a player whose attributes mirrored his own as a commanding centre-back and leader.

Liverpool Football Club expressed their heartfelt condolences, extending their sympathies to Ron’s wife, Ann, his family, and friends during this difficult time. As a mark of respect, flags across club sites will be lowered to half-mast, honoring the enduring legacy of this beloved figure in the club’s history.
