Dutch forward Memphis Depay’s recent move to Brazilian side Corinthians has garnered attention in the football world. After leaving Atletico Madrid as a free agent in July, Depay signed a two-year contract with Corinthians, tying him to the club until December 2026.
Throughout his career, Depay has showcased his skills across various clubs, including notable stints at PSV Eindhoven, Manchester United, Lyon, Barcelona, and most recently, Atletico Madrid. His journey has been marked by impressive performances, with the forward amassing a total of 46 goals in 98 appearances for the Netherlands since making his debut in 2013.
While depictions of his move to Brazil were imminent, Depay’s involvement with the national team sparked curiosity following his absence from the Netherlands squad for the September Nations League matches. However, national team head coach Ronald Koeman clarified that the transition to Corinthians would not necessarily impede Depay’s international prospects, setting the stage for potential future appearances in the national colors.
Koeman’s differentiation between Depay’s move to Brazil and that of his compatriot Steven Bergwijn’s transfer to the Saudi Pro League is worth noting. Koeman expressed disapproval of Bergwijn’s move to Saudi Arabia, highlighting the distinctions in the levels of the respective leagues. The coach’s acknowledgment of the differing dynamics reinforces the potential for Depay’s continued involvement with the national team, contingent upon his fitness and form as he adapts to his new environment in Brazil.
Koeman on Depay-Corinthians deal: “I disapproved Bergwijn to Saudi, with Memphis can be different”.
“The level of the league in Brazil is different. So yes, Depay can still be part of the national team but it depends on his fitness and if he still reaches his level”.
Depay’s impact on the pitch, coupled with his versatility as a forward, positions him as a prominent figure in both club and international football. As he embarks on this new chapter with Corinthians, the football community eagerly awaits the unfolding of his narrative in the vibrant football landscape of Brazil.
