Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was forced to leave the game early due to a concussion as Miami suffered a 31-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills at the Hard Rock Stadium. Meanwhile, Bills’ player James Cook made a significant impact, catching a touchdown pass and running for two scores.
Tagovailoaβs departure from the game occurred in the third quarter following a collision with defensive back Damar Hamlin, resulting in the back of his head hitting the turf. This swift and impactful injury raised concerns about Tagovailoa’s season, especially given his history of dealing with head injuries. Head coach Mike McDaniel did not confirm if the Dolphins planned to place Tagovailoa on injured reserve, indicating that the team would re-evaluate his condition on Friday.
“I’m just worried about my teammate like the rest of the guys are,” McDaniel said. “We’ll get more information tomorrow and then take it day by day from there.”
Despite an injury to his left non-throwing hand in Buffalo’s opener, Bills’ quarterback Allen displayed a commendable performance, completing 13 of 19 passes for 139 yards. Notably, Allen boasts an impressive 12-2 record against the Dolphins, while the Bills have dominated with a 14-2 record against Miami since head coach McDermott’s first year in 2017.
James Cook’s impactful performance was a highlight of the game, as he caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Allen and scored on runs of one and 49 yards in the first half, including an acrobatic flip into the end zone to secure the Bills’ 24-7 lead. This remarkable feat of three first-half touchdowns tied a team record.
Throughout the game, Miami’s star receiver Tyreek Hill was limited to three receptions for 24 yards, despite having been in the spotlight of national headlines earlier in the week. Hill had encountered a publicized incident with the Miami-Dade County police officers before the Dolphins’ season opener.
The game witnessed Buffalo capitalizing on two turnovers by Tagovailoa in the first half, with Ja’Marcus Ingram intercepting Tagovailoa’s pass intended for receiver Grant DuBose on Miami’s opening drive. Additionally, Christian Benford intercepted a pass resulting from miscommunication between the quarterback and receiver Robbie Chosen. Notably, Tagovailoa threw another interception to Ingram, who returned the ball 31 yards for a score, furthering the Bills’ lead to 31-10.
Tagovailoa had faced previous concussion diagnoses in 2022, adding more urgency to the concerns surrounding his well-being. Following the injury, Bills players and Tagovailoa’s teammates urgently signaled for trainers to attend to the situation. After being helped to his feet and making his way to the locker room under his own power, Tagovailoa concluded the game with 145 passing yards and a 5-yard touchdown to De’Von Achane.
Looking ahead, the Bills are scheduled to host Jacksonville on Monday, September 23, while the Dolphins will travel to Seattle to face the Seahawks on Sunday, September 22.
