Al Nassr have made a significant managerial decision by parting ways with manager Luis Castro, a 63-year-old who has overseen a slow start to the new Saudi Pro League season, with just one win in three games. The Riyadh club drew 1-1 against Al Shorta of Iraq in the opening game of the AFC Champions League Elite, leading to a decision to part ways with Castro.
“Al Nassr can announce that head coach Luis Castro has left the club,” the club said on social media. “Everyone at Al Nassr would like to thank Luis and his staff for their dedicated work during the past 14 months, wishing them the best of luck for the future.”
This move comes after coach Rudi Garcia left Al Nassr in April 2023, following a failure to secure first place despite the high-profile arrival of Ronaldo four months prior. The pressure to perform at the highest level in the Saudi Pro League has been evident, especially considering the talent at Castro’s disposal, with the likes of Ronaldo, Sadio Mané, and Aymeric Laporte.
Stefano Pioli, who led AC Milan to the Serie A title in 2022 and became available after leaving the club in May, is rumored to be the frontrunner to take over as the new head coach of Al Nassr. Pioli’s experience and success in Serie A have put him on the list of Al Nassr’s preferred replacements. It will be interesting to see how Al Nassr performs under the potential guidance of Stefano Pioli, given the strong competition they face in the domestic league and knockout competitions.
