Emma Raducanu overcame a foot injury to defeat Yue Yuan of China and reach the quarter-finals of the Korea Open

Emma Raducanu reached the last eight in Seoul, after an intense and closely contested match against China’s Yue Yuan, converting her seventh match point to secure victory. The young British tennis star demonstrated resilience and skill as she battled through potential discomfort from a suspected foot injury to defeat Yuan in straight sets with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-3, thereby advancing to the quarter-finals of the Korea Open.

The match began with Raducanu looking somewhat tentative, particularly during her opening service game which involved a nervy hold through deuce. However, she quickly found her rhythm, showcasing her exceptional baseline play with a series of strategic shots. This enabled her to earn the first break of the contest, taking a 2-1 lead, which set the tone for her performance.

Despite this promising start, Yuan proved to be a formidable opponent. She showcased her determination by breaking straight back and managing to fend off several break points, allowing her to edge ahead with crucial holds at 3-2 and then 4-3. The exchanges were high-stakes and thrilling, with both players displaying their competitive spirits.

When Raducanu next had the opportunity to break, she took it decisively with a stunning crosscourt backhand winner, a moment that seemed to invigorate her. After briefly receiving medical treatment during a changeover, she held her serve to claim the opening set 6-4, demonstrating both focus and tenacity.

The second set began with Raducanu continuing to capitalize on her momentum, breaking Yuan in the first game. She maintained her strong performance, holding her serve and breaking her opponent again, establishing a commanding 3-0 lead early on. Yuan managed to break back once, which highlighted her fighting spirit, but Raducanu responded with poise.

As the set progressed, Raducanu executed a tough hold through deuce to reach 4-2, and shortly after, she broke Yuan again to go ahead 5-2, putting her in a prime position to serve for the match. However, the pressure mounted as she failed to convert four match points. Yuan’s tenacity shone through as she saved the points, momentarily swinging the momentum back in her direction.

Raducanu faced more challenges as she neared the finish line of the match; she had to save two break points in an effort to rally and finally bring up her fifth match point. Although Yuan struck a remarkable winner to stave off the point, Raducanu was unyielding. She managed to save a third break point with a powerful ace, bringing the game to an intense seventh deuce. Unfortunately, a double fault momentarily opened the door for Yuan, allowing her to break Raducanu for the first time in the set, demonstrating her relentless fighting spirit with a powerful forehand winner.

Nevertheless, Raducanu was not deterred. She broke Yuan to 15 in the Chinese player’s next service game, ultimately clinching her place in the quarter-finals after needing seven match point opportunities to finally secure the win. This victory not only underscores Raducanu’s capacity to handle pressure but also showcases her skill and poise on the court.

Looking ahead, Raducanu will next face the winner of the match between top seed Daria Kasatkina and American Hailey Baptiste, as she sets her sights on reaching the semi-finals in Seoul, a potential opportunity to further solidify her position as one of the rising stars in women’s tennis.
