Emma Raducanu has found herself facing yet another challenge in her professional tennis career due to a foot injury that caused her to withdraw from the quarter-finals of the Korea Open. This latest setback has been confirmed by Raducanu herself, as she shared on social media that she sprained ligaments in her foot, and consequently, she will be unable to compete in the upcoming China Open.
In her heartfelt message, Raducanu expressed her disappointment, stating: “Hello, last week in Seoul I sprained some ligaments in my foot which unfortunately need some more time to heal. It means I can’t play in Beijing but I hope to be back competing as soon as I can.” This announcement has resonated with fans and supporters who have been following her journey closely.
The injury during her match against Daria Kasatkina in the Korea Open quarter-finals was particularly unfortunate, as it forced her to retire mid-match. This incident marks a difficult period for the 2024 season, during which Raducanu has been plagued by various injury concerns. Earlier in the season, she had to withdraw from the Miami Open due to a lower back injury, despite being awarded a wildcard that would have allowed her to participate.
In addition to these setbacks, Raducanu also faced health issues during the Australian Open, where she was impacted by a stomach bug that affected her performance. However, her determination shone through as she managed to bounce back, achieving victory over Marketa Vondrousova in Abu Dhabi thereafter, which was a significant boost for her confidence.
Raducanu’s ability to recover and push through challenges was tested yet again when she withdrew from the second major of the year, opting out just 24 hours before the French Open qualifying was set to begin. She mentioned her decision was strategic, aiming to provide herself with the best opportunity to remain fit and compete effectively for the remainder of the year.
Unfortunately, her progress was hindered during Wimbledon when an untimely slip on the Centre Court grass disrupted her momentum. Raducanu was performing well in her last-16 clash against Lulu Sun when she lost her footing while sliding for a forehand. This incident led her to call for a trainer’s intervention. After receiving treatment on her lower left leg as well as her back, which seemed to have been causing her discomfort throughout the match, she finished the contest but ultimately fell short of victory.
As someone who had recovered from surgeries in 2023, the management of injury risk has remained a top priority for Raducanu. She made the tough choice not to play for Team GB at the Paris Olympics to avoid switching back to clay courts at Roland Garros, which could potentially compromise her performance ahead of the important hard-court season in the USA.
The recent foot injury that has forced her withdrawal from the China Open adds to a series of unfortunate events on her path. While she plans to take the necessary time for her recovery, many are hopeful that she will soon return to the court, ready to reclaim her place among the top players in tennis. Raducanu’s journey reflects resilience and determination, and fans eagerly await her return to competitive play.
