OFFICIAL: Raphael Varane has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 31

Raphael Varane has announced his retirement from football at the age of 31, marking the conclusion of a remarkable career that spanned over a decade. The defender, who recently joined Serie A club Como, faced an unfortunate turn of events when he suffered a critical knee injury just 23 minutes into his debut during a Coppa Italia match against Sampdoria. This injury has now forced him to step away from the game he has excelled at for so long.

In an emotional statement shared on Instagram, Varane reflected on the end of his professional playing days, stating, “They say all good things must come to an end.” He revealed that while he would no longer be taking to the pitch wearing his boots and shin pads, he intends to remain involved with Como, albeit in a different capacity. “A new life begins off the pitch. I will remain with Como. Just without using my boots and shin pads. Something I am looking forward to sharing more about soon,” he expressed, signaling his desire to stay connected to the sport in a new role.

He added on Instagram: “I have no regrets, I wouldn’t change a thing. I have won more than I could have even dreamed of, but beyond the accolades and trophies, I am proud that no matter what, I have stuck to my principles of being sincere and have tried to leave everywhere better than I found it.

“I hope I have made you all proud.”

Throughout his distinguished career, Varane accumulated an impressive 480 club appearances, showcasing his exceptional talent and contributions to every team he played for. He enjoyed a successful spell at Real Madrid, where he won the UEFA Champions League four times, solidifying his status as one of the top defenders in Europe. Under the guidance of legendary coaches, Varane was a pivotal figure in Real Madrid’s success, securing three LaLiga titles after joining the club from Lens as an 18-year-old in 2011. His defensive prowess was crucial during the club’s domination of European football, as he played key roles in three of the four Champions League finals the team triumphed in from 2014 to 2018.

Real Madrid release club statement for Raphael Varane after his retirement.

“Varane will forever remain in the heart of all Madrid fans as one of the great centers in the history of Real Madrid and for always representing the values of our club. We all wish him good luck”.

Following his move to Manchester United in the summer of 2021, expectations were high that Varane would help revive the fortunes of the club after several challenging seasons. However, the team struggled to find their rhythm, finishing sixth, third, and eighth in the Premier League during his time there. Despite this, Varane’s tenure with United was marked by significant achievements, including being part of the squad that lifted the FA Cup in 2024, overcoming Manchester City 2-1 in a thrilling final at Wembley. Additionally, the team secured the Carabao Cup the previous season, highlighting Varane’s ability to contribute to the club in critical moments.

United posted on X: “You represented our colours with great distinction during your three seasons at Old Trafford.

“We thank you for your humility, leadership and commitment. May these qualities serve you well in your next venture.

“Once a Red, always a Red.”

Varane’s international career has been equally illustrious. He earned 93 caps for the French national team, serving as a key player during their victorious 2018 World Cup campaign. The defender was instrumental throughout the tournament, participating in all seven matches and scoring in the quarter-final against Uruguay. France’s dramatic 4-2 victory over Croatia in the final remains one of the highlights of his career, further establishing Varane as a world-class athlete.

As he embarks on this new chapter in life, Varane leaves behind an inspiring legacy filled with triumphs and memorable moments on the field. Fans and fellow players alike will remember him not only for his talent and dedication but also for the humility and grace with which he approached his career and his decision to step away from professional football.
