Olivier Giroud Shines in Los Angeles FC US Open Cup Victory

Former Arsenal, Chelsea, and AC Milan striker Olivier Giroud was instrumental in Los Angeles FC’s triumph over Sporting Kansas City, scoring during their 3-1 victory that secured the US Open Cup title.

At 37 years old, Giroud, who made the move to the west coast club after leaving AC Milan at the conclusion of the last season, showcased his experience and skill. He tapped in a crucial goal from close range in the 53rd minute, which gave LAFC an early lead in the match and set the tone for their performance.

However, the match was not without its challenges. Kansas City’s Erik Thommy managed to equalize, pushing the game into extra time. The tension mounted as both teams fought hard, but it was the Mexican defender Omar Campos and Sierra Leonean forward Kei Kamara who found the back of the net during the extra period, ultimately sealing the victory for LAFC and securing the coveted trophy.

For Giroud, who announced his retirement from international duty in July, leaving behind an impressive record as France’s all-time leading scorer with 57 goals, this victory holds significant value. In the aftermath of August’s disappointing Leagues Cup final defeat against Columbus Crew, Giroud expressed his desire to win trophies as a primary motivation for joining LAFC. He stated, “I came here to win trophies and to play that kind of final,” emphasizing the importance of the US Open Cup win to him and his teammates.

Reflecting on the recent struggles faced by the team, he acknowledged the difficult run in the weeks leading up to this victory but praised the team’s unity: “We’ve been in a difficult run these last weeks, but we stuck together, and we really wanted to win this trophy for the fans, for the club. It does matter for me, for the boys, and I’m so happy to score in this final and to help the team.”

The victory not only adds silverware to LAFC’s cabinet but also keeps their hopes alive for achieving a domestic league and cup double. Historically, only three teams have accomplished this remarkable feat, with LA Galaxy being the last to do so in 2005, following the exploits of Chicago Fire and DC United. As of now, LAFC sits fourth in the MLS Western Conference standings, with strong expectations to secure a playoff spot as they continue their campaign. The excitement surrounding Giroud’s contributions and LAFC’s ambitions for further success is palpable among fans and players alike.
