Carlos Alcaraz is set to face Jannik Sinner in the final of the China Open after decisively defeating Daniil Medvedev in straight sets.
Carlos Alcaraz, currently ranked third in the world, demonstrated both his exceptional talent and competitive spirit throughout the match, wrapping it up in just 88 minutes with a scoreline of 7-5, 6-3. Medvedev struggled against the young Spaniard, requiring two medical timeouts to address issues with his left leg, which may have impacted his performance. Alcaraz’s recent triumphs come on the heels of an uncharacteristic second-round loss to Botic van de Zandschulp at the US Open, making this victory part of a notable comeback with eight consecutive wins.
On the opposite side of the bracket, world number one Jannik Sinner secured his place in the finals by overcoming Chinese wildcard Bu Yunchaokete with a score of 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). The 23-year-old Italian is competing under a cloud of controversy following recent developments with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), which has announced its intention to appeal a decision that cleared him of any wrongdoing after he reportedly tested positive twice for an unauthorized substance. Sinner’s defense centers on his claim that the substance was accidentally introduced to him by his physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi.
Upon hearing of WADA’s appeal, Sinner conveyed his shock, as he had hoped that the issue was behind him. This situation has caused him considerable anxiety, admitting to experiencing sleepless nights due to the stress lingered from the situation. Nevertheless, with clear focus and determination, he has knuckled down and is readying himself for this crucial final match. His recent win against Yunchaokete marked his 15th victory in a row, leading to an anticipated 10th clash with Alcaraz, which promises to be an electrifying encounter.
Describing his current emotional state, Sinner remarked, “This is a very sensitive time for me—challenging and distinctly different.” He further added, “Every victory I achieve is a positive indication.” This statement reflects Sinner’s resilience and determination as he pursues his seventh title on the ATP Tour in 2024.
As he looks back on their previous face-offs, Sinner recalls competing against Alcaraz last year, where he emerged victorious, but maintains that the Spaniard holds a narrow lead in their head-to-head record at 5-4. Alcaraz triumphed in both of their encounters in 2024, including a gripping five-set battle in the semi-finals of the French Open earlier this year. “We understand each other’s games very well, but every match brings its unique challenges,” Sinner stated. “I’m truly delighted to be in the final,” highlighting the familiarity and mutual respect shared between the two athletes.
