OFFICIAL: FIFA confirms it will allow member associations of participating clubs in the new Club World Cup to open their transfer window from 1 to 10 June 2025

FIFA has recently announced a significant update regarding the 2025 summer transfer window, particularly affecting clubs that will participate in the upcoming Club World Cup. This event is scheduled to take place in the United States from June 15 to July 13, 2025. The noteworthy aspect of this announcement is the allowance for ‘flexibility’ within the transfer window, although it comes with specific limitations.

One of the key points of concern is related to players whose contracts are set to expire during the tournament. Those whose contracts end on June 30 will find themselves in a unique situation, as they will technically become free agents right in the middle of this prestigious international competition. This could potentially create challenges for clubs that rely on such players for their performance throughout the tournament.

In light of this, the FIFA Council, in a unanimous decision, has put forth regulations that provide Member Associations the opportunity to open what is being described as an “exceptional registration window.” This window will be available from June 1 to June 10, 2025, prior to the tournament’s commencement. This measure aims to ensure that teams can still engage with new players or make necessary changes to their rosters just before the competition kicks off.

However, this flexibility does not extend to those players whose contracts are expiring during the tournament itself. FIFA has stated that although clubs may replace players during a restricted period from June 27 to July 3, 2025, this still does not guarantee any contract extensions for players whose agreements end mid-competition. The regulations emphasize a limited approach to replacements, indicating that specific limitations will be enforced regarding how many players can be replaced in this timeframe.

The overarching goal of these regulations appears to be encouraging clubs and players to find amicable solutions that would allow players with expiring contracts to participate without issues. While some had hoped that a short extension might be permissible to allow players to complete the tournament by July 13, FIFA has made it clear that this will not be feasible. Ultimately, this decision underscores the complexities involved in managing player contracts and transfer regulations in conjunction with major international tournaments.
