Joshua Kimmich Open to Future with Barcelona Amid Bayern Talks

Joshua Kimmich has not dismissed the idea of potentially transferring to Barcelona as he opened up about his career prospects while being part of Bayern Munich.

Kimmich’s situation at Bayern Munich has garnered significant attention, particularly since the summer transfer market. His current contract is set to expire in June 2025; however, he has yet to affirm his loyalty to the club. This ambiguity has resulted in speculation linking him to various elite teams, including Barcelona, a club renowned for its rich history and impressive achievements in football. With the Champions League clash against the Blaugrana approaching, the 25-year-old midfielder hinted at a future possibility with the Catalan side, which has intrigued fans and pundits alike.

During the pre-match press conference, Kimmich was asked directly if he would consider moving to Barcelona in the upcoming season. His response was measured: “I’m not thinking about that. But you should never rule anything out in life and also in football.” This careful wording suggests that while he is currently focused on his responsibilities at Bayern Munich, he remains open to future possibilities. He elaborated on Barcelona’s significant influence on his development as a player, stating, “Barcelona and Spain as a national team had a big impact. Xavi Hernandez was my childhood role model; I always watched the games with Pep as a coach and the Tiki-Taka. They were a role model.”

In addition to discussing potential club changes, Kimmich also took time to speak highly of Barca boss Hansi Flick. The two have shared a successful history, having played together at Bayern and with the German national team. Kimmich reflected fondly on Flick’s impact, sharing, “Hansi created a good spirit back then. He gave the players and everyone around us a lot of trust, even during points of doubt, including moments when we players doubted ourselves.” He went on to describe the electrifying brand of football they played during that period, saying, “We then played spectacular football that we all loved. We created a dynamic, and we believed in what sort of football we were playing. That was what that time was about.”

Despite the allure of a move, Kimmich confirmed that he is currently engaged in discussions with the Bundesliga giants regarding a potential contract extension. He stated, “Everyone knows I’m in talks with the club. What I discuss with the club remains internal. I won’t talk about it in a press conference.” This acknowledgment of ongoing negotiations indicates his affinity for Bayern Munich while still leaving the door ajar for future opportunities.

Following the Champions League match against Barcelona on Wednesday, Kimmich and his teammates will shift their focus to the Bundesliga, where they will face VFL Bochum on Sunday. This upcoming game will test Bayern’s resolve as they aim to solidify their position as contenders in German football. As the season unfolds, the implications of Kimmich’s future and the possibility of a transfer to Barcelona will continue to captivate fans and mark crucial points in his career journey.
