Report: Roma pick Alessandro Antonello as next CEO

Roma appear to have made their decision regarding the successor to Lina Souloukou, who recently resigned from her position.

According to the latest report from Corriere dello Sport, Alessandro Antonello, an executive at Inter Milan, is poised to take over as Roma’s new CEO. This comes after a month of speculation and a comprehensive search for a suitable candidate to fill the leadership void left by Souloukou’s exit.

The article highlights that, following weeks of deliberation, the Friedkin family, owners of Roma, seem to have zeroed in on Antonello, establishing him as the frontrunner for the position. Dan Friedkin has developed a rapport with Antonello through their interactions at meetings of the ECA, an association of European clubs. This organization is presided over by Nasser Al-Khelaifi, who also serves as the chairman of Paris Saint-Germain. Their shared perspectives on sports governance and related issues appear to have strengthened their relationship, ultimately paving the way for Antonello’s potential appointment.

Antonello’s journey in the sports realm began several years ago when he joined Puma, where he gained invaluable experience and insights into the commercial side of sports. However, at Inter Milan, his influence has waned, particularly since the involvement of the Oaktree fund. They have made significant changes within the club, placing their representatives into key roles, thereby shifting power dynamics and diminishing Antonello’s authoritative stature.

Interestingly, the Friedkins also explored other options for Roma’s leadership, such as Giovanni Carnevali, the CEO of Sassuolo, and Claudio Fenucci, who is currently leading Bologna but has ties to Roma from the Pallotta era. Despite evaluating these alternative candidates, it appears Antonello’s profile has emerged as the most compelling in recent discussions. His potential leadership role comes after a pivotal moment for the club, marked by Souloukou’s departure that coincided with the controversial dismissal of club legend Daniele De Rossi.

As Roma looks ahead, Antonello’s extensive background in both sports management and corporate strategy may provide the vision and direction necessary to guide the club towards success in upcoming domestic and European challenges. With his appointment, fans and stakeholders alike will be eager to see how he navigates the complex landscape of football and fosters growth and stability within the organization.
