OFFICIAL: Aston Villa and Argentina goalkeeper Emi Martinez has claimed the Yashin Trophy for the second consecutive year

Aston Villa and Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has successfully defended his title by winning the Yashin Trophy at the recent Ballon d’Or awards, highlighting his distinguished status as one of the leading goalkeepers in global football.

The Yashin Trophy is awarded to the best goalkeeper of the year and is determined by former Ballon d’Or laureates. This prestigious honor has been conferred since 2019 and has previously been awarded to notable players like Alisson Becker, Gianluigi Donnarumma, and Thibaut Courtois, with Martinez earning it for the first time in 2023. His ability to retain the trophy speaks volumes about his consistent level of performance and crucial impact for both his club and his country.

Martinez played an integral role in Argentina’s triumphant World Cup campaign in 2022, displaying outstanding skill and bravery throughout the matches. He continued to excel last season, contributing significantly to Argentinaโ€™s victory in the Copa America. His defensive prowess was evident as he maintained clean sheets in five of six tournament matches, particularly during the intense final against Colombia, which Argentina won 1-0.

On the club front, Martinez has been a vital part of Aston Villa’s success in domestic competitions. Over the past season, he recorded 15 clean sheets in all competitions, playing a significant role in helping Villa qualify for the Champions Leagueโ€”a remarkable feat for the club. Since joining Villa in 2020, he has established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper, making 171 appearances and endearing himself to fans.

In the Yashin Trophy rankings, Martinez secured first place, with Unai Simon of Athletic Bilbao finishing as runner-up. Andriy Lunin from Real Madrid came in third, while PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and AC Milan’s Mike Maignan completed the top five. Following them were Yann Sommer from Inter Milan in sixth, and Giorgi Mamardashvili, who is on loan at Valencia from Liverpool, in seventh. The final spots in the top ten included Diogo Costa from Porto, Ronwen Williams of Mamelodi Sundowns, and Gregor Kobel from Borussia Dortmund.

Looking forward, Aston Villa will face Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup this week, a crucial match for the team, before they take on Tottenham away from home on November 3. These upcoming games will provide Martinez with the opportunity to showcase his exceptional abilities once again, reinforcing his reputation as one of the elite goalkeepers in the sport and continuing to build on his impressive legacy.
