Manchester United have officially approached Sporting CP regarding the potential appointment of head coach Ruben Amorim as their new manager. This move comes in light of Erik ten Hag’s recent dismissal, and discussions are reported to be ongoing to determine how the 39-year-old Amorim could succeed the Dutch tactician.
In order to secure Amorim’s services, United would need to pay the release clause stipulated in his contract with Sporting. Sources indicate that the Premier League club is willing to meet this requirement, showcasing their determination to bring in the talented coach. Amorim, who has rapidly made a name for himself in the footballing world, has led Sporting to a remarkable season thus far. His team currently holds a perfect record in the Primeira Liga, winning all nine matches, while also boasting an impressive goal tally of 30 goals scored and only 2 conceded.
In addition to their domestic success, Amorim’s side has performed admirably in European competitions. They remain unbeaten in the Champions League, having achieved victory in two out of three matches played, placing them in a solid position as they aim for qualification to the knockout stages.
When pressed about his future during a pre-match press conference following Ten Hag’s sacking, Amorim exhibited his usual professionalism, stating, “I was expecting that question, and obviously I am not going to talk about my future. I am not going to speak about my future because no matter what I say, I’d have to always talk about it. Since the first day, I said it was not worthy to ask about it, and I am not going to make any comments about my future.” He continued, emphasizing his pride in his current role: “I am very proud of being Sporting head coach.”
Recently, Amorim’s name has been linked with Manchester City, particularly with the anticipated arrival of Sporting’s Hugo Viana, a close associate of Amorim’s, who is set to take over as Manchester City’s director of football. Prior to this, he was considered as a prospective replacement for Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool last summer before Arne Slot ultimately took the reins. Furthermore, Amorim had previously engaged in discussions regarding the managerial position at West Ham, but he later clarified that he regretted the timing and publicity surrounding those conversations.
At just 36 years old, Amorim has already achieved remarkable accomplishments in his managerial career. He led Sporting to their first league title in 19 years in 2021 and subsequently added a second title to his name last season. His success extends beyond the league, having secured the Taca da Liga (the Portuguese League Cup) three timesβtwice with Sporting and once with Braga.
A former midfielder for Benfica and the Portuguese national team, Amorim hung up his boots in 2017. Two years later, he embarked on his managerial journey at Braga, where his talent caught the eye of Sporting, leading to his appointment in March 2020. Under his stewardship, Sporting has come to be recognized as one of the most promising teams in Europe, with Amorim establishing himself as one of the brightest young coaches in the sport today. This potential move to Manchester United further underscores the growing enthusiasm around his coaching capabilities and the high regard in which he is held within the footballing community.
