Ruben Amorim addresses fans’ frustration regarding his departure from Sporting CP as he begins his role as the new Manchester United coach

Ruben Amorim addressed Sporting CP fans’ anger ahead of moving out of the club to join Manchester United, a decision that has stirred mixed emotions among supporters.

Amorim was loved and cherished at Sporting, having guided the club to an impressive four trophy wins in the last four seasons, including two Liga Portugal titles. His success on the pitch earned him a revered status among the fans, who now feel betrayed as he prepares to leave for Manchester United midway through the 2024-25 campaign. His departure follows Erik ten Hag’s recent exit from Old Trafford, prompting United to act swiftly in securing the 39-year-old as their new manager.

While United officially announced his arrival on Friday, Amorim will not formally leave the Portuguese club until November 11. In the meantime, he took to the sidelines for what would be his penultimate league game, where his team showcased their strength with a resounding 5-1 victory over Estrela Amadora.

Following the match, Amorim spoke to Sport TV, where he openly addressed the fans’ emotions surrounding his departure. “It wasn’t a normal week. Of course, I felt different this week. I understand the anger and disappointment of some fans, but that’s life,” he stated, acknowledging the intensity of the situation. He expressed gratitude for the support he had received, reflecting on how he was moved by the ovation from the crowd during the game.

“I’m already in task mode; I’m very grateful to all the fans, to everyone here. Today I did the same as always; I only thank the fans when we lose. As we won, today I went back to the dressing room,” he elaborated, emphasizing that his focus remains on the team despite the impending transition.

Amorim assured the fans that he would properly say his farewells in the next home game, adding, “Of course, in the next game here at home, whether we win or lose 0-15, then I’ll say goodbye to the fans. It was the best period of my life, but I have to make my decisions, and I take them naturally.” His understanding of their pain was palpable as he reminded fans that “we move on, and time heals everything,” leaving them with a sense of closure in light of his decision.

The young coach’s next challenge will see him face his future Premier League rival Pep Guardiola as Sporting prepares to take on the English champions Manchester City in a high-stakes Champions League clash on Tuesday night. This match promises to be a significant moment for Amorim as he transitions to a new chapter in his coaching career, all while navigating the emotional landscape left behind at Sporting CP.
