Coco Gauff achieved a remarkable victory by defeating defending WTA Finals champion Iga Swiatek for only the second time in their previous 13 encounters, clinching her spot in the semi-finals in Riyadh. This significant win showcased Gauff’s resilience and determination, especially in light of her 11 double faults throughout the match.
The former US Open champion demonstrated her skill and tenacity as she defeated the former world No. 1 Swiatek with a final score of 6-3, 6-4. This victory not only improved Gauff’s record in round-robin play to 2-0, allowing her to take control of the Orange Group but also confirmed that Aryna Sabalenka will secure the year-end world No. 1 ranking since Swiatek can no longer surpass her position given the tournament’s outcome.
Gauff’s impressive performance marked her first victory over Swiatek since the Cincinnati Open in 2023, effectively ending the Polish player’s six-match winning streak at the WTA Finals. Both athletes exhibited inconsistencies throughout the match; however, Gauff emerged as the more formidable player, punctuating her triumph with a powerful roar after breaking serve in the match’s concluding game.
Despite the victory, Gauff’s night was characterized by both ups and downs, finishing with 10 winners alongside 33 unforced errors, including 11 double faults. Swiatek, on the other hand, outshined Gauff in terms of winners, delivering 15, but she ultimately succumbed to a staggering 47 unforced errors in what turned out to be a captivating and dramatic encounter.
For Swiatek, who is transitioning under the guidance of her new coach, Wim Fissette, there remains a chance to join Gauff in the semi-finals. However, accomplishing this will require her to secure a win against Jessica Pegula in her forthcoming match, thereby adding an intriguing layer of competition to the ongoing tournament.
Pegula’s quest for her first WTA Finals title faced a setback after suffering a 6-3, 6-3 defeat to Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova. This loss marked Pegula’s second consecutive defeat in straight sets during the Orange Group stage, effectively eliminating her chances of progressing to the semi-finals. Her upcoming match against Swiatek is particularly significant, as it is a repeat of last year’s final, where Pegula had a rough outing, losing in straight sets with a score of 6-1, 6-0.
Notably, this was Krejcikova’s first win at the WTA Finals after four previous attempts. The Czech player, who qualified for this prestigious event by winning the women’s singles title at Wimbledon this year, will face Gauff in the final match of the Orange Group on Thursday, promising even more excitement in the concluding stages of the tournament as both players vie for advancement.
