The future of Formula 1’s most famous event has been secured after a significant six-year extension was agreed upon to keep the Monaco Grand Prix on the calendar until 2031. This announcement solidifies the race’s position as a cornerstone event in the Formula 1 calendar, ensuring that fans and teams alike can continue to revel in the unique atmosphere that only the streets of Monte Carlo can provide.
The Monaco Grand Prix, renowned for its stunning visual appeal and challenging circuit, will remain on the Formula 1 calendar for at least another decade. The previous agreement with the Automobile Club of Monaco was set to expire after the 2025 race, but this new deal guarantees the race’s prestigious status beyond that timeframe.
Historically, the last 20 editions of the Monaco Grand Prix have been held in May. However, with the newly signed agreement that takes effect starting in 2026, the event will be shifted to the first weekend of June each year. This change not only revitalizes its scheduling but strategically positions it to optimize the overall racing calendar.
Formula 1 president Stefano Domenicali expressed enthusiasm about the continuation of the race, stating, “I’m delighted that Formula 1 will continue to race in Monaco until 2031.” He emphasized the significance of the Monte Carlo streets, describing them as unique and emblematic of the sport, adding, “the Monaco Grand Prix remains a race that all drivers dream of winning.”
This adjustment in scheduling opens the possibility of rearranging other events on the calendar, particularly the Canadian Grand Prix, which has traditionally taken place in June. By moving the Monaco Grand Prix to early June, it allows Formula 1 to create a more efficient itinerary, following the Miami Grand Prix at the start of May. Such changes will help minimize the logistical burdens of travel, making the racing calendar more sustainable.
Domenicali further elaborated on the broader implications of the agreement, stating, “This agreement signals a new era of partnership and innovation between Formula 1 and Monaco.” He highlighted the forward-thinking leadership of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, which plays a crucial role in developing an optimized calendar, aimed at reducing logistical pressures and cutting down on the environmental impact of the global championship. This move aligns with Formula 1’s continued efforts on the path towards achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2030.
The race is not only significant due to its glamor and history but has also seen its share of memorable moments. Hometown hero Charles Leclerc made history in 2024 by becoming the first Monegasque driver to win this iconic race. Prominent figures in the sport, including Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso, Max Verstappen, and Sergio Perez, are among the current F1 drivers who have triumphed in Monaco, showcasing the venue’s competitive nature.
Looking ahead, the 2025 event will mark a significant milestone, as it celebrates the 75th anniversary of the race’s official debut in Formula 1. Scheduled to take place from May 23-25, it promises to be an unforgettable celebration of speed, skill, and the storied legacy of the Monaco Grand Prix.
