Spanish police have arrested three individuals following racist insults directed at Barcelona players Lamine Yamal and Raphinha during last month’s Clásico match held at the Bernabéu Stadium. The incident occurred as the match drew to a close, despite Barça securing a commanding 4-0 victory over Real Madrid, with goals from both Yamal and Raphinha contributing to the scoreline.
The police confirmed through social media on Saturday that arrests were made due to the xenophobic statements which were deemed violations of the dignity and moral integrity of the two footballers. The investigation was sparked by a report from LaLiga, which brought attention to the matter and provided pertinent evidence to the police.
In a detailed statement released on Saturday, LaLiga specified that their complaint was instrumental in the arrests. They offered recordings of the incidents coupled with insights from a lip-reading expert, which likely played a crucial role in identifying those responsible. LaLiga has publicly committed to combating racism in all forms, both within the realm of football and beyond.
This ongoing effort to address racism in Spanish football has received heightened scrutiny due to the repeated incidents concerning Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior, who has endured significant abuse since his arrival in Spain back in 2018. In a poignant reflection on his experiences, Vinícius expressed that the pain of such racism still lingers for him, even as he acknowledges some progress in identifying offenders more effectively.
The series of recent actions against those who perpetrate racism is noteworthy. In June, three Valencia fans were sentenced to eight months in prison for their racial abuse toward Vinícius during a LaLiga match in May 2023, marking a significant legal precedent in Spain. In September, a Mallorca supporter received a 12-month suspended sentence after being found guilty of using racist insults directed at Vinícius and Villarreal’s Samuel Chukwueze.
Additionally, last month saw the arrest of four individuals by Spain’s national police in connection with a hate campaign targeting the Brazilian international. In light of these developments, LaLiga president Javier Tebas has advocated for harsher penalties, including prison sentences for fans who engage in racial abuse during matches, emphasizing that the league will maintain its efforts until the issue is decisively addressed.
Following the Clásico, Vinícius voiced his condemnation of the racist abuse targeting Barcelona’s players, stressing the need for accountability and a rejection of such behavior in society. “What happened was terrible, and there’s no room for these criminals in our society,” he remarked, confidently asserting that authorities would take action to identify and punish those guilty of these discriminatory acts.
The case involving Lamine Yamal is not an isolated incident; the teenager has faced similar challenges since emerging as a vital player for Barça at just 15 years of age in 2023. Earlier this year, Movistar pundit Germán “Mono” Burgos was dismissed for making a racist remark about Yamal prior to Barcelona’s Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain, highlighting the ongoing struggle against racism in sports commentary as well.
As these events unfold, the commitment of both LaLiga and Spanish authorities to combat racism in football remains a crucial and necessary step towards fostering a more inclusive environment within the sport.
