Lille OSC Fans Stabbed: Club Condemns Violence Ahead of Champions League Match Against Bologna

Lille OSC has expressed grave concerns after two of their fans were reportedly stabbed in what they described as a “cowardly and intolerable attack” ahead of their crucial Champions League match against Bologna scheduled for Wednesday.

The Ligue 1 club swiftly issued warnings to their supporters, urging them to “exercise vigilance” following the alarming incident that took place in the city’s university district. Eyewitness accounts, as relayed by Italian media citing local police, detail a confrontation involving around 80 individuals, purported to be Bologna supporters, who violently assaulted approximately 30 Lille fans. The attackers were reportedly armed with metal bars and belts, highlighting the viciousness of the assault.

Local police confirmed that three Lille fans sustained injuries during the altercation and required hospital treatment, though all have since been discharged. In a statement reflecting their stance, Lille OSC unequivocally condemned the attack, stating: “The club unreservedly condemns this cowardly and intolerable attack, which contravenes all the values of football and popular support.” They further extended their support to the affected fans and expressed wishes for their swift recovery.

As Lille prepares for their upcoming match, they are currently navigating a challenging competition landscape. Presently, they sit in 17th place in a 36-team table with just seven points, vying for a Champions League last-16 play-off spot. Meanwhile, Bologna finds themselves in a precarious position as well, having accumulated a solitary point from four matches, intensifying their fight against possible elimination from the tournament. Both teams now face the dual pressures of performance on the field and ensuring the safety and well-being of their supporters in light of recent events.
