Mick Schumacher will leave his role as Mercedes F1 reserve driver at the end of the 2024 season, marking an important transition in his career. Schumacher, son of the legendary seven-time F1 world champion Michael Schumacher, joined Mercedes at the beginning of 2023 after being released from his previous team, Haas. During his time with the Silver Arrows, he has participated in multiple tests and simulator sessions, honing his skills and gaining invaluable experience within one of the most successful teams in Formula 1 history.
The 25-year-old German driver was previously linked to a potential seat at Alpine over the summer, but that opportunity ultimately went to Jack Doohan, who will team up with Pierre Gasly starting next season. Additionally, Schumacher was considered to fill the spot vacated by Logan Sargeant at Williams, but that position was filled by Franco Colapinto. These developments indicate a highly competitive environment within the sport, where opportunities are limited and talent is abundant.
“I am grateful to Toto and the entire Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team for the insight I have gained over these two years,” said Schumacher.
“They have undoubtedly made me a more experienced racing driver because I have got to know the engineering side better. But watching these cars race and not sitting in the cockpit myself is tough.
“I want to get back to focusing 100% on racing. I want to be fully committed to the sporting side of motorsport. Ultimately, it is racing that you want to do as a driver, it is racing that gives you that feeling you love.”
As Schumacher prepares to depart Mercedes, rumors emerge about Valtteri Bottas, who is set to leave Sauber at the end of this year, taking over Schumacher’s position at the team. This transition underscores the dynamic nature of the F1 driver market, where teams are constantly evaluating their options to enhance performance.
Beyond his involvement in Formula 1, Schumacher has also been competing for Alpine in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) this year, where he achieved a notable podium finish in the penultimate round held in Fuji. His performance in WEC has allowed him to showcase his talent on a different stage of motorsport, contributing to his development as a driver.
Looking ahead, Schumacher will continue to race for Alpine in WEC during the 2025 season. However, his prospects for a return to Formula 1 seem increasingly unlikely. As the grid continues to evolve and new talents emerge, Schumacher’s departure from Mercedes marks both an ending and a new beginning in his motorsport journey. The road ahead may be challenging, but the experience and resilience he has gained thus far will undoubtedly shape his future endeavors in racing.
