Michail Antonio Undergoes Leg Surgery After Car Accident

West Ham forward Michail Antonio has undergone surgery for a fractured leg following a road traffic accident that took place on Saturday. The club released an official statement on Sunday confirming that the 34-year-old veteran player would “continue to be monitored over the coming days,” emphasizing that updates on his condition would be shared “when appropriate.” This indicates that the club is committed to keeping fans and the public informed about Antonio’s health as he recovers.

The Premier League club further expressed their heartfelt well-wishes for Antonio’s recovery, stating: “Everyone wishes Michail a speedy recovery and wishes to express its sincere gratitude to the football family at large for the overwhelming support shown since yesterday’s news.” They also extended a special thank you to the emergency services and first responders who attended to Antonio in the immediate aftermath of the incident, along with the medical team that continues to assist him in his recovery process.

Prior to undergoing surgery, West Ham had announced that Antonio was “stable, conscious and communicating” after the troubling crash, which occurred in Coppice Row, Epping. This initial update reassured fans that he was in a stable condition despite the seriousness of the accident.

Essex Police confirmed that officers were dispatched to the scene of what was described as a serious collision, involving a Ferrari sports car. They are currently appealing for witnesses and any dashcam footage that might aid in the investigation of the incident. In response to the crash, the Essex County Fire and Rescue Service detailed how they managed to free a man trapped in his vehicle, highlighting their quick response time—crews were called to the scene at 1:02 PM and successfully released the casualty by 1:45 PM, after which he was placed in the care of the Ambulance Service.

Antonio, who was born in London and represents Jamaica internationally, is currently in his 10th season with West Ham after transferring from Nottingham Forest in 2015. He has been an integral part of the team, making 15 appearances across all competitions this season, including 11 starts in the Premier League. Notably, he featured in the 3-1 defeat against Leicester in the midweek game, coming off the bench as a substitute in the second half.

Throughout his time at West Ham, Antonio has demonstrated his scoring prowess, netting 83 goals in 323 appearances and contributing to the team’s success in clinching the Conference League title in 2023. His football journey began with non-league Tooting and Mitcham, before he advanced to the professional ranks with Reading, and further had stints with clubs such as Cheltenham, Southampton, Colchester, and Sheffield Wednesday.

Since making his debut for the Jamaican national team in 2021, he has continued to make his mark, scoring five goals in 21 appearances. The Jamaica Football Federation has acknowledged Antonio’s current predicament, with head coach Steve McClaren expressing their collective sentiment: “On behalf of the entire group of players, support staff, and technical staff, I would like to wish Michail a speedy recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with him at this time.” This underscores the widespread concern and support from the football community during this challenging time for Antonio.
