Brighton & Hove Albion has signed Diego Gomez, a 21-year-old midfielder from Paraguay, from Inter Miami for a $15m fee with add-ons, effective January.
Gomez’s professional journey began at Paraguayan club Libertad, where he quickly made a name for himself. His young career took a significant leap when he joined Inter Miami in July 2023, a team renowned for being home to soccer superstar Lionel Messi. This has undoubtedly provided Gomez with invaluable experience as he transitioned into the competitive landscape of professional football in the United States.
Brighton’s head coach, Fabian Hurzeler, expressed enthusiasm about welcoming Gomez to the squad. “We’re looking forward to working with Diego very soon,” he stated, recognizing the player’s impressive performances at both club and international levels. Hurzeler emphasized that, like many young talents entering the Premier League, Gomez will require a period of adjustment to acclimate to the demands of English football. However, he firmly believes that Gomez possesses the qualities necessary to significantly contribute to the team’s success.
During his time with Libertad, Gomez made 52 appearances, scoring six goals, an achievement that earned him a scouting nod from Inter Miami. In his time with Miami, he made a strong impact right away, scoring on his MLS debut. His first season saw him score once from five games, but he has flourished into a regular starter this year, netting six goals in 28 appearances, helping the team reach the MLS play-offs.
Standing at 6 feet tall, Gomez is not only a dynamic force in the midfield but also brings a physical presence that Brighton’s technical director, David Weir, highlighted as being particularly valuable. “He’s a dynamic midfielder player who can contribute goals and assists,” Weir noted, expressing confidence in Gomez’s ability to tackle the challenges of the Premier League.
Moreover, Gomez’s international experience adds to his credentials. He represented Paraguay at the Olympics last summer and has accumulated 12 appearances for the senior national team. This level of experience will certainly aid his transition to the Premier League, and Brighton is optimistic that he will be ready to compete for a spot in the starting squad as he joins the club next month. The excitement surrounding this move reflects Brighton’s commitment to building a talented and competitive team for the future.
