Rwanda Launches Bid for F1 Grand Prix Near Kigali Airport

F1 has edged closer to the possibility of holding a race in Africa, as Rwanda has officially launched its bid to host a Grand Prix in the foreseeable future. This potential development comes after a long absence of Formula 1 races on the continent, with the last event taking place back in 1993 at the South African Grand Prix in Kyalami. The desire to revive the sport in Africa has been echoed by various figures, including seven-time F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, who has vocally advocated for the inclusion of an African race on the F1 calendar.

Recently, Rwandan President Paul Kagame confirmed the country’s ambitious plans to welcome Formula 1 back to Africa. This announcement follows a meeting between F1 President Stefano Domenicali and representatives from Rwanda’s bid in September. The proposed circuit aims to be a permanent track located near the planned Bugesera airport, not far from the capital city of Kigali. This strategic location could provide an exciting new venue for the world of motorsport.

Interestingly, Rwanda has also been in the spotlight this week as it hosts the FIA general assembly for the first time. This event culminates with end-of-season driver and team awards, where prestigious world championship trophies are awarded across various motorsport disciplines. During the assembly, President Kagame addressed the attendees, expressing his enthusiasm for bringing Formula 1 back to Africa. He stated, “I am happy to formally announce that Rwanda is bidding to bring the thrill of racing back to Africa, by hosting a Formula 1 Grand Prix.” He also extended gratitude to Domenicali and the F1 team for their constructive discussions thus far, underscoring Rwanda’s serious and committed approach to this opportunity.

Looking ahead, the 2025 F1 calendar has already been finalized, meaning the earliest that a race in Rwanda could make its debut would likely be in 2026. However, F1 has recently indicated that the Dutch Grand Prix will exit the calendar post-2026, potentially creating an opening for a new race in 2027. This timeline could allow ample time for the design and construction of a new track. Although a definitive timescale for a return of F1 to Africa is still uncertain, Rwanda appears to lead this exciting initiative for the continent.

Moreover, Lewis Hamilton’s endorsement of Rwanda adds further weight to the bid. Having explored various countries in Africa over the summer, Hamilton remarked that Rwanda was among his “favourite places” to visit. His appreciation for the country underscores the potential that hosting an F1 race could have in promoting tourism and enhancing the sporting landscape in Rwanda and the wider African region. The excitement surrounding this opportunity speaks to a growing interest in diversifying the global F1 calendar and tapping into new markets that have long been considered neglected in the world of motorsport.
