𝐎𝐅𝐅𝐈𝐂𝐈𝐀𝐋 | Lamine Yamal will be out for 3-4 weeks with an ankle injury

Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal is set to miss between three and four weeks after injuring his right ankle in Sunday’s disappointing 1-0 defeat by Leganes in La Liga.

The 17-year-old talent suffered the unfortunate injury during the first half of his side’s unexpected loss at home to Leganes. Despite clearly struggling at the break, Yamal continued to fight through the pain until the 75th minute, when he was finally replaced by Gavi, a fellow teammate. His determination to stay on the pitch highlighted his commitment to the team, but ultimately it was a decision that may have exacerbated the injury.

According to the official Barcelona website, “The first team player Lamine Yamal received a blow to the right ankle during the game against CD Leganes on Sunday. Tests carried out on Monday have revealed that the player has a grade 1 injury to the anterior tibiofibular ligament in the ankle. The player is expected to be out for three to four weeks.” This diagnosis underscores the severity of the injury, putting a significant dent in the team’s attacking options as they navigate a crucial period in the season.

Compounding the issue, Yamal’s injury comes only two weeks after he made his return to action following a previous three-week absence caused by another setback to the same ankle. This prior injury forced him to miss international duties with Spain during the last international break and resulted in him being sidelined for three club matches, further frustrating his development and consistency on the field.

With his current injury, Yamal is poised to miss several key matches, including next weekend’s vital La Liga clash at home against Atletico Madrid, a rival who is now level on points with Barcelona at the top of the league table. Additionally, he will not participate in the Copa del Rey third-round tie away to lower league Barbastro on January 4, and his availability for the Spanish Supercup semifinal against Athletic Bilbao in Jeddah remains uncertain, with the possibility of missing the final as well. Furthermore, his involvement in an important league match against Getafe on January 19 is also in doubt.

Barcelona’s recent performances have not met the expectations set by fans and analysts alike. The team’s defeat to Leganes has left them with just five points from their last six La Liga matches, raising concerns over their form. A failure to secure a victory against Atletico Madrid next weekend could likely lead to Barcelona relinquishing its position at the top of the league, making Yamal’s absence all the more critical as the club seeks to regain its footing and focus on challenging for the title.
