Mo Salah is the first player in Premier League history to reach double figures for goals and assists before Christmas

Mohamed Salah grabbed two goals and set yet more records as he fired Liverpool to a commanding 6-3 victory in a helter-skelter encounter with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. The match, filled with excitement and end-to-end action, showcased Liverpool’s attacking prowess while also highlighting areas for improvement in their defensive strategy.

In the first half, the Egyptian winger became the first player in Premier League history to reach double figures for both goals and assists before Christmas. This remarkable achievement continues to underline his importance to the Liverpool squad. Salah now boasts an astounding tally of 18 goals and 14 assists in all competitions for Liverpool this season, demonstrating his consistent performance and ability to contribute to the team’s success.

With this latest brace, Salah moved up to fourth on the all-time list of Liverpool goalscorers, totaling 229 goals and surpassing the late Billy Liddell, a legendary figure in the club’s history. This milestone not only reflects Salah’s individual quality but also his deep connection with the storied club, where he has carved out an incredible legacy since joining.

Luis Diaz also netted two goals during the match, adding to Liverpool’s impressive goal tally, while Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai also found the back of the net for Arne Slot’s side. The dynamic attacking performance from Liverpool was essential, as they now lead second-placed Chelsea by four points, with a game in hand over the Londoners, who could only manage a 0-0 draw against Everton earlier in the day.

Despite the loss, Tottenham showed resilience with goals from James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, and Dominic Solanke, making for a chaotic but highly entertaining match at the Tottenham Stadium. This fixture marked just the second time Tottenham have conceded six goals during a home Premier League game, the last being a humiliating 6-1 defeat to Chelsea in December 1997.

After the match, Salah spoke to Sky Sports about his new Premier League record, expressing pride in his achievements but emphasizing the importance of team performance: “I didn’t think about it before the game but I’m glad I have done it, something that makes me proud, I’ll keep working hard.” He reflected on the team’s attacking displays while acknowledging the need for defensive improvements: “We were quite good up front but defensively we need to improve as a team. Conceding three goals is quite hard. It’s a good result, hopefully we just keep going.”

Salah also discussed the chaotic nature of the encounter: “We expected that [a chaotic game], the way they play, they open the game, they enjoy their football, physically tough and mentally we always have to be in the game.” He praised Tottenham’s intensity, noting, “They don’t change much the way they play, it’s intense. City came here and struggled, other teams too. I’m happy we won because they play an intense game.”

On achieving the milestone of being fourth on Liverpool’s all-time goalscoring list, he remarked, “It’s great to achieve that at such a big club, but the most important thing is that we won the game. Wherever I am going to end my career I am happy about it.” When asked if he had any further comments about his future, Salah replied succinctly: “No,” indicating a focus on the present.

For Spurs, who had eight key players missing, they struggled to maintain the energy levels from their midweek League Cup quarter-final triumph over Manchester United and were down 5-1 at one point before they made a late rally.

Liverpool opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, with Trent Alexander-Arnold given too much space to deliver a perfect cross that found the unmarked Diaz, who headed home for his 10th goal of the season. Alexis Mac Allister doubled the lead after 36 minutes, nodding in a well-placed effort following an excellent team move, but James Maddison managed to pull one back for Spurs, curling home his eighth goal of the season.

Moments before the half-time whistle, Radu Dragusin was beaten in the air by Szoboszlai, who received a return pass from Salah and calmly slid it under Tottenham’s keeper, Fraser Forster, increasing Liverpool’s advantage to 3-1. The second half saw Liverpool continue their dominance, with Salah scoring his first of the match shortly after the break, benefiting from a chaotic sequence in the Spurs’ box.

Salah soon added his second, exhibiting excellent finishing after being set up by Szoboszlai, solidifying his position as the league’s top scorer. Spurs fought back with goals from Kulusevski and Solanke, briefly reviving hopes of a comeback, but Liverpool’s power in attack proved too much. Diaz sealed the win with a well-placed shot into the bottom corner after another assist from Salah, securing another emphatic statement result for the league leaders, Liverpool.
