Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has been dealt a severe blow after wingers Raheem Sterling and Bukayo Saka were both ruled out with injuries, raising concerns among fans and the coaching staff alike.
Saka had to be taken off just 24 minutes into his team’s Premier League win against Crystal Palace on Sunday with a hamstring issue. This prompted immediate fears that the Gunners’ star man faces a significant spell on the sidelines, further complicating Arteta’s tactical plans. The potential absence of Saka is especially troubling considering the talented winger has been a key player for Arsenal this season, contributing five goals and registering ten assists in the Premier League thus far. His attacking prowess has made him one of the team’s most valuable assets, with only Kai Havertz having scored more goals in the top flight for Arsenal this season. Close behind, Declan Rice stands as their next top assist maker with three assists, highlighting the importance of finding alternatives in the upcoming matches.
Arteta did not shy away from expressing his disappointment over the loss of Saka, stating, “It’s a huge blow. He’s obviously a big player for us, you just have to see the impact that he has on the team.” He acknowledged the challenge ahead with a sense of determination, indicating that this situation might push the team to explore various strategies to adapt without their star winger. “It’s going to be a really good exercise for us to think of ways to overcome another challenge because we’ve had a lot over the season,” he added, emphasizing the need for resilience and tactical flexibility.
In a double blow for the Gunners, Sterling, who has made just 11 appearances since joining on loan from Chelsea, may have been the ideal candidate to step into Saka’s shoes. However, Arteta revealed that Sterling is also unavailable due to injury. “He’s gonna be out for weeks I believe,” Arteta said regarding Sterling’s condition. “He needs further testing tomorrow to understand the extent of his injury. It’s his knee. We have to wait and see another 24 hours. Unfortunately, he’s gonna be out for a while.” The timing of this injury could not be worse for Arsenal, as they are very much in the race for the Premier League title and desperately need all hands on deck.
When asked about how he will reorganize his team to cover for the absences, Arteta shared, “I am putting some ideas together. I haven’t got there yet. But I have a few. Then I want to speak with them as well to understand how we are going to generate that and take it in a positive way.” His emphasis on maintaining a positive mindset highlights his leadership approach and his intention to rally the team in the face of adversity. “Because that is going to mean we are going to be different. We went through the period with Martin, the period with five or six defenders missing, the period without many other players. We will continue to do that, finding ways and taking it with positive energy.”
With two crucial matches coming up—hosting Ipswich on December 27 and visiting Brentford on January 1—Arteta will have to quickly devise a plan to navigate the challenges posed by these injuries. Arsenal currently finds themselves in third place in the table, six points behind league leaders Liverpool, who also have a game in hand. The pressure is mounting not only to secure wins in these upcoming fixtures but also to maintain momentum in their pursuit of the title, despite the setbacks they face in their squad. Arteta’s ability to adapt and find solutions will be put to the test as the title race heats up in the Premier League.
