Official: Fabio Cannavaro Named New Coach of Dinamo Zagreb

Italy’s 2006 World Cup and Balon d’Or winner Fabio Cannavaro has officially been announced as the new head coach of GNK Dinamo Zagreb, placing him in direct competition with his former teammate Gennaro Gattuso, who currently manages Hajduk Split. This development marks a significant moment in Croatian football, as two icons of the beautiful game now find themselves vying for supremacy on the touchlines.

Cannavaro, who celebrated his 51st birthday in September, brings a wealth of experience, albeit with a managerial career that has seen him take on multiple roles across different leagues around the world. His announcement as Dinamo’s head coach was made today, and he is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the team, which has undergone its share of challenges in recent seasons.

Throughout his managerial career, Cannavaro’s tenures have often been brief, with his most notable spells occurring in the Chinese football landscape. Here, he held positions at renowned clubs like Guangzhou Evergrande and Tianjin Quanjian, alongside a stint managing the China national team. He also had roles at Al-Nassr and Serie B side Benevento, and even spent a short period coaching Serie A club Udinese, where he was at the helm for just six matches.

Looking ahead, Cannavaro’s inaugural match in charge of Dinamo Zagreb will take place against the English Premier League side Arsenal in London as part of the prestigious UEFA Champions League on January 22, 2025. This encounter will not only serve as a stern test of his leadership but is also a high-stakes opportunity to showcase his tactical acumen on an international stage.

The club’s director, Marco Maric, expressed high hopes for Cannavaro, emphasizing his ability to cultivate a style of play that can restore the team’s dominance in the Croatian Football League (HNL). Maric noted, “The new coach cultivates the style of play that we need for the return of dominance in the HNL; he builds the game and imposes dominance.” His statements reflect a firm belief that Cannavaro’s extensive playing career, coupled with his coaching experience, will inspire the current squad.

Maric highlighted Cannavaro’s great charisma and understanding of the game, which is seen as essential in conveying the rich playing experience
